Eliminate or restrict garbage disposal use. If a garbage disposal must be used the septic tank must be cleaned more frequently.
Only discharge biodegradable waste into the septic system.

Keep gutter drains and excess water away from the septic system.
Keep the septic tank cover accessible for service.

Your septic system is not a trash can. Don't flush any feminine products, disposable diapers, condoms, wipes, paper towels, dental floss, cotton swabs, cigarette butts, coffee grounds, cat litter, cooking grease, paint, or any chemicals.
Plant anything over the leach field except grass.
Drive over the drainfield (with the exception of a lawn mower) or compact the soil in any way.
Dig or build anything over the tank or leach fields.
